Ever Gold Gallery is pleased to announce an ongoing installation at artMRKT by artist Jeremiah Jenkins in addition to Ever Gold’s booth, 611.

Bay area artist Jeremiah Jenkins will be staging a demonstration during the San Francisco Art Market art fair. He will be organizing himself into a solitary occupying encampment of the fair until tear gassed or until the fair ends. Representing “the 0.00000032%” Jenkins will be drawing a line and standing up to the other 99.99999978%. The inequality between individuals and everyone else must stop!

The occupy movement was one of the biggest stories in the news this past year. While I personally support the message, I felt a bit left out. I grew up poor, have worked my whole life, and am currently in one of the lowest tax brackets possible. The paradox is that as an artist I find myself drinking wine, eating brie, and enjoying art as much as any one percenter. I propose to occupy Art Market for the duration of the fair as a representative of myself, the 0.00000032 percent. My encampment will be only big enough for myself and will have all the things I need to be there for the couple of days. My equipment will be a mix of practical and posh. I will wear a tuxedo everyday and have wine and cheese. I will not be protesting anything, but instead I will just be there representing my singular perspective and my personal class. The goal is to bridge the gap that divides the 99 and the 1 percents, by combining both lifestyles without conflict.

Lost For Words
Opening: Fri, May 18th (6-9pm)
@FFDG
2277 Mission St.

FFDG is pleased to present Dave Kinsey’s first solo show in San Francisco since 2000 entitled “Lost For Words”, an exhibition of mixed-media paintings by the Los Angeles and Three Rivers, CA based artist. There will be an opening reception for the show on Friday, May 18th (6-9pm). The artist will be present. Beer and wine will be available.

Dave Kinsey’s work has been a staple in the contemporary art scene for over a decade. Combining mediums of acrylic, collage and spray paint, Kinsey composes expressive mixed media paintings on heavyweight canvas that burst with color and speak to both his and his audiences humanity. These multi-layered textured works, which vary in form and content, echo the complexities of our human existence. By juxtaposing gentle imagery like flowers with the chaos of man and wild, he speaks to our own never-ending struggle to understand our history and the pandemonium of daily life in modern culture. These thoughtful pieces engage the viewer through their decisive composition and explosive color palette, challenging them to seek deeper meaning. In Kinsey’s words, “what is not seen is what’s there to be discovered.” and continues, “I’m trying to push the viewer into a more confrontational place.”

In his new body of work, Kinsey continues his evolution into more abstract representation while still incorporating elements of the figures which gained him fame during his influential, early career, street art campaign, “Unlearn.” In combining and reducing his visual elements, Kinsey has refined his communication with the viewer to a more concise manner within each work. In this body, Kinsey flaunts his skill to say just as much with sometimes less, at times using fewer brush strokes to get to the same place; we see his iconic heads explode and break apart in bold and energetic compositions that provoke emotion and reflection.

Kinsey elaborates on the figures in his work, “They can be grotesque if that’s what you see. From my perspective of the world, it’s hard to paint reality without a sense of truth, especially when it comes to portrayals of humanity. There is sadness and hope and fear. There is the constant struggle with nature.”

About Dave Kinsey

Dave Kinsey was born in Pittsburgh in 1971, attending the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and the Art Institute of Atlanta before moving to California in 1994 to pursue a career as a designer and fine artist. Selected exhibitions include URBIS Museum in Manchester, UK, NEXT Chicago, Joshua Liner Gallery in NY, ALICE Gallery and Art Brussels in Belgium. His work has been featured in multiple local and international print and online publications from The New York Times, LA Weekly and Washington Post to Anthem Magazine. He has also been invited to speak at institutions such as the Pasadena Art Center, UCLA, Montserrat College of Art and the Semi-Permanent conference in Sydney, Australia.

——-

In 2010 The members of Atlas began writing songs with the intention of
releasing them in September of 2011. Having been locked away for the
past seven months creating new music they enlisted the help of
producer and recording engineer Daniel Petersen to help with the
project. The result is an impressive 3 song EP that is truly just the
beginning of a completely new body of work.

Whether or not you have tattoos, Ink Stories — a new series of documentary shorts about tattoo artists and those inspired by the aesthetic — should still definitely interest you. In the first episode of the series, we’re introduced to Daniel “Ronnie” Ronson, a young squire apprenticing to learn the art and business of professional tattooing at London’s Jayne Doe, while honing his own unique art style. Like many tattoo artists before him, Ronson’s burden is simply “trying to make something your own, that’s already been done.” by Zach Pina

Home to some of the most beautiful and progressive architecture in the entire world, Dubai will soon see the construction of a hotel with submerged, underwater rooms that offer unparalleled views of the Persian Gulf. Conceived by designers Deep Ocean Technology and dubbed the Water Discus Hotel, the building will be the first of several in the emirate and will feature an underwater section of 21 rooms, a dive center and bar up to 10 meters below the sea’s surface. A unique lighting system will illuminate the scene outside the submerged rooms’ windows while macro photography will also allows guests to zoom in on the surroundings for a better view. With the above-water portions of the hotel suspended high enough to avoid tsunamis and flooding, the underwater disc is engineered to surface in the event of a storm or other danger. by Thomas Fox

The comic book-inspired and postwar American art phenomenon beat last year’s record sale of $43.2 million USD set at Christie’s back in November. Tobias Meyer, director of Sotheby’s contemporary art department worldwide and the evening’s auctioneer, said after the sale, “Great icons make great prices.” Sleeping Girl has not appeared on the market since it was purchased by noted West Coast collectors and philanthropists Beatrice and Phillip Gersh from the Ferus Gallery in 1964. In the 48 years since its purchase, the painting has been exhibited only once – in the 1989-1990 Museum of Contemporary Art exhibition “Selections.” You know what they say, blondes reallydo have more fun
